Is cycling good for weight loss? Daily biking for fitness delivers results!

Biking retreat daily outings utilize both single-speed cruisers and 26” mountain bikes. In other words, fitness biking and rider safety are the goals. Therefore, you will not find road bikes with drop bars and skinny tires in fitness biking.

Fitness Biking and Biking for Weight Loss

Daily focus is on fitness biking and a variety of weight training. To complement the non-weight-bearing aspect of fitness biking, other cardio activities include jump rope, weight sleds, and kettlebells.

Is Cycling Good for Weight Loss?

Biking for fitness and weight loss requires good nutrition for fuel. At Debra’s bike retreat, she takes you on a grocery tour.  Then, the best whole food nutrition is available for self-preparation under her guidance. In addition, bottled water is abundant in the well-stocked water pantry. Hydration begins before the ride at the bike retreat. See more about biking hydration.

Cycling Retreat Schedule

Group activities are on schedule starting as early as 5:30 AM varying seasonally.

Rates are consistent and non-negotiable. However, family rates may be available depending on the length of stay and season.

Sunny Southern Nevada weather averages 300 days of sunshine a year and minimal rainfall, so there are virtually no insects.

Bike Retreat Trail and Maps

At the retreat, fitness and safety are the goals. Although some routes are suitable trails for fitness biking, others require intermediate skills. These routes will feature minimal technical challenges. So, if you are an advanced cyclist seeking thrills and risky biking, we don’t do that. However, if you are biking for fitness, you will be on the best bike trails in Southern Nevada.

Route progressions to build skill, confidence, strength, and endurance will keep you safe while you get fit.

Bicycle Safety

Whether your goal is fitness biking or biking for weight loss, safe cycling is the first consideration.  Bicycle safety practices are from the League of American Cyclists. Therefore, safety rules and guidelines are a priority. Our paved trails accommodate two-way pedestrian and cycling travel. Clearly, we enforce the laws of the road and trail guidelines.

Henderson Bike Trails

Henderson’s trail system is known for being well-maintained and supervised. You will ride single-speed and 26” mountain bikes at the cycling retreat. Such bikes offer rider control and greater tire traction.

Please be mindful that the bike retreat is a small residential operation. Therefore, canceling impacts the business. A non-refundable deposit for half the total cost is due at booking. Local Bicyclists Seeking Instruction Only?

By now, if you have read this far you gather that biking is an ongoing activity for the private fitness and weight loss retreat. If you are a local interested in private or semi-private bicycle instruction, please indicate your level of interest by filling out the contact form for local bicycle instruction. A private bicycle orientation session is required before you are qualified for a group ride.

In the event that you haven’t gotten a bike of your own yet, or the bike you bring is the wrong size for you, I will loan you one of mine for the lesson. If you have another person wishing to share the session with you then a semi-private lesson will be scheduled for you. Bicycle safety is learned by proven best practices. Give yourself the extra level of safety by investing in your bicycle training.

Biking Retreat Fitness Camp introduction by Aussie on 7th Annual Retreat

Ben completed his 7th annual weight loss retreat coming to my fitness residence from Australia.  His average stay has been 4-6 weeks in residence to lose weight and increase fitness.

Best Time of Year for a Bike Retreat?

Ben has attended the live-in fitness camp at all different times of the year and calls it an “evergreen” program. It is effective any time or season. Recently, he decided to avoid the winters in Australia by coming to Southern Nevada during our summer.

Biking Outdoors Year-Round? How does that work in the Summer?

People ask how can I operate a Southern Nevada fitness camp outdoors in the summer. Actually, it is my favorite time to do it. It is daylight as early as 5:15 AM and a beautiful time of day. The temperature stays rather tolerable until the late morning after we have enjoyed our outdoor activities. Then, it is to the indoor pool during midday followed by an afternoon siesta.

Longer Summer Days

Longer days make it possible to enjoy an evening outing because it doesn’t get dark until close to 9 PM. Yoga to stretch and relax before retiring rounds out a perfect day of activities.

Ben, age 35-42

This has been my seventh visit from Australia to Debra’s Fitness retreat in Henderson, Nevada. Along with my previous visits, the results for my weight and fitness have been fantastic again.  I’ve been able to lose 17 pounds in 24 days, including four inches from around my waist.

Why 7 Visits for Debra’s Biking Retreat?

In addition to the variety of outdoor boot camp activities, cycling has proven to offer quick results for my fitness and weight loss. The trail system in the Las Vegas Valley has advanced over the years into an exceptional network of routes; it offers something for all levels of cycling, from the novice through to the advanced. Debra maintains a high level of safety standards on all adventures and provides excellent coaching for the proper use of cycling equipment.

This is a great outdoor adventure that provides health benefits and is an exceptional recreational activity.

Kala, age 21

Coming here was a great decision. I actually learned how to ride a bike. I graduated from not being able to pedal or even steer a tricycle correctly to progressing to the beach cruiser. Finally, a mountain bike with hand brakes is a huge accomplishment.

Matt, age 39-45

Hello, my name is Matt. I’m from Denver, Colorado. This is my fifth time seeing Debra Stefan and her fitness camp here in beautiful Henderson, Nevada. We got to work out and do a lot of mountain biking. Just the setting for all of the exercise sessions was just beautiful. Debra is the perfect coach and host, extremely knowledgeable, and she’s also exceptionally motivating.

Jane, age 37

The things I really liked about coming to Debra’s are just the variety of exercises that you do being outdoors even you know even in winter in Vegas; you can still enjoy walking and cycling.

Chad, age 26

I did a 20-mile bike ride from the Las Vegas home all the way to Boulder Beach. Absolutely, unbelievable. I hated the bike. If you had told me you know what, you’re going to have a great time riding 20 miles on a bicycle, I would have wondered what drugs you were on.

Kay, age 52

I have to tell you that I really did not like biking. Then I enjoyed it tremendously, so much so that we bought the same bike when we got home- his and hers!

Levy, age 42

I have conquered the trike. I rode three miles on the trike I finally beat it. Me and the trike have become as one.

Steve, age 37

I never thought I would like biking, and I’m excited to get home and get myself a bike now because of the progress I was able to make here. I mean, we’ve done 18-mile bike rides, 20-mile bike rides, and it’s not the same ride every time, which is great that it doesn’t get boring.

Dave, age 70

You’ll learn so much, and we go out, ride bikes in the countryside, do trails, climb mountains. I did an 18-mile bike ride the other day up and down, where we climbed up 1,500 feet.

Walt, age 80

I couldn’t be more pleased with what’s happened to my father at 80 years old. It doesn’t matter what your age is. If my 80-year-old father can do it, anybody can do it!

Dorothy, age 50

Bike riding has turned out to be my favorite exercise ever. I haven’t really been on a bike since I was a kid. I couldn’t imagine the progress that was ahead of me. Now, going on a mountain bike ride for 15 miles up and down hills without stopping was a huge accomplishment.

Fred, age 71

I’m a 71-year-old man and I do not have a bike, but I can assure you when I get home, my wife and I will both get one and start enjoying some of the fun things you can do riding. I’m really looking forward to that where I haven’t been on a bike since I was a little kid.

Donald, age 42

My aerobic capacity increased quite a bit. Thank you for the use of different bikes for mountain biking and climbing mountains. You, Debra, have been super nice to us all and very accommodating if we wanted filet mignon, we will get filet mignon, and you open your house for us, which is very nice.

Wala, age 32

I haven’t been on a bike since I was seven years old, and when I got here, I was on the trike. How heavy my legs were. I couldn’t pedal, I couldn’t move. Then, I progressed from the tricycle to the single-speed bike to the mountain bike, and I could bike for five miles. That’s something really unbelievable, truly liberating.

Mahmood, age 33

Pushing myself to the limits, then “oh, these are not my limits. I can go more and more and more.” It was so great I could pick up my pace easily, and push myself up hills with a bike.

Vik, age 39

This was a unique, very specialized program that is not available anywhere in the country.

This is tough but good; very good.

I loved every minute of it. Now let’s go for a bike ride.

While many people have not bicycled in years, the skill is a bio-motor pattern etched at a young age. Therefore, it is a given that it can come back naturally. Safety practices and proper use of bicycle gears introduce you to an outdoor adventure for both health and recreation.

Hadn’t been on a bike since I was 8 years old, but even after 60 years, I got it back!

Fred W., Monterrey, CA

My balance was iffy, so the trike liberated me on the bike trails.

Hal B., Sherman Oaks, CA

Triathlon training on the challenge hills got me in peak shape riding only cruisers and mountain bikes.

Matt B., Denver, CO

Debra had bikes for our entire group and no one was left behind. She educated us from A-Z for biking.

Grace S., Jakarta, Indonesia

Bike fitness or fitness biking has become the popular recommendation for those restricted by arthritis or other orthopedic conditions. Gordon Blackburn, M.D., Program Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Cardiac Rehabilitation, Preventive Cardiology Section, suggests cycling on a stationary bicycle as an ideal option. Beneficial as that may be, most people find greater exercise adherence when riding outdoors.

Outdoor cycling is best approached with some practical instruction to guarantee the most positive experience. Before you join a group of experienced riders, make sure that you have been to a bike camp and guided through the details that many take for granted.

Bike Retreat Fitness and Outdoor Biking

This section is normally referred to as “Hazards and Risks”. However, outdoor cycling offers the best training element. Mother Nature. Sitting on an indoor stationary bike and pressing buttons to add or reduce resistance doesn’t allow you to react. Sure, there is a bike program that allows you to randomize the resistance. Still, it is not the same when you know that you are in control. The victory over prevailing in adverse weather conditions is sweeter than any computerized challenge.

Road Hazards – The Centers for Disease Control reports that bicycling-related emergency room visits exceed half-a-million annually. More than half of all bicycle-related accidents are children.

  • Know and follow traffic rules. Use hand signals to alert motorists and other cyclists when turning or changing lanes.
  • Wear a helmet that fits. Wear the helmet so that it comes down to the eyebrow line in order to protect the brain frontal lobe. This is the most likely point of impact should you take a fall and hit your head. Avoid dropping your helmet as it reduces the protective ability. Helmets are not optional on any self-respecting group bike ride.
  • Bike Safety Visibility – Always wear brightly-colored clothes during the day and reflective materials at night. You can use a visibility vest as your top layer. Also, neon-colored armbands that light up are available. Make sure that your bike has adequate rear red lights and daylight in front of the handlebars.
  • Gloves – Wearing gloves offers you protection from sun and road, as well as, palm padding. Vibration can cause hand numbing on longer rides.
  • Eye Protection – Whether sunglasses for the day or clear lenses for night rides, make sure to eliminate the risk of road debris, insects or dust flying in your eyes.
  • Padded Bike shorts – The chamois will help absorb road vibrations and prevent saddle soreness. Compression fabric and padding reduce chafing caused by repetitive leg motion and constant pressure from sitting. more…
  • Jersey with pockets- Consider the convenience of strategically located pockets with garments designed for cycling needs.
  • Planning and tracking a route prepares you for a great ride. See Debra’s favorite local bike camp routes and map your own ahead of time. Use a tracking application on your personal device.
