Never Too Much Balance Training
Debra Stefan demonstrates dynamic balance skills
Dynamic Balance Training Fall Prevention Program
Fall Prevention Exercise and dynamic balance training are important fitness abilities. In fact, training for better balance delivers fast results. However, once a fall victim becomes fearful they stop trusting their ability to balance altogether. Then the downward spiral begins and balance worsens. So, the solution is fall prevention training and fall prevention classes.
Fall prevention classes feature reactive balance exercises that sharpen corrective reflexes.
So, what is dynamic balance? It’s daily life movement in all planes of motion, rather than a static balance. Dynamic balance is unlike static balance, where you may stand on one leg or with your feet on a center line. Dynamic means you are moving through space in motion. Hence, you react, and correct instead of surrendering to another fall. As a result, you become more fall-proof.
Therefore, the best fall prevention program focuses on fall prevention exercise involving dynamic balance.
So, if you seek fall prevention training be sure that your fall prevention classes are not yoga style static postures. Life is not static, but its motion.
Fall Prevention Training, Fall Prevention Classes, Fall Prevention Exercise
As a result of effective fall prevention training, you will react and correct instead of fall. Falling is dangerous for those with bone loss and usually results in broken bones and hospitalization. Consequently, there are no medications that exceed the effectiveness of strength training with weight-bearing exercise to enhance bone density. However, that will be another topic for yours truly to expound on. As a masters level 4 Elite Women’s Powerlifting World Record Holder, I can boast 100% bone density. More about that here…
Dynamic Balance Training
The best balance training drills in the video are dynamic balance. That is, while moving rather than static. However, dynamic balance training is truly reactive balance exercises. Reactive balance exercise is important in any fall prevention program. So, make sure that your fall prevention classes practice them.

Uploaded shortly after establishing the Debra Stefan VegasFitness1 YouTube channel on Jun 27, 2009, the balance training drills are from 2006. Of course, this is long before everyone is carrying a smartphone video validating fitness efforts.
Balance training trends in fitness
Fitness trends in the early 2000s popularized dynamic balance training using the stability ball. Hence, the trend has since lost popularity. Interestingly, fitness product manufacturers disclaim the use of weights on unstable balance devices. Yet, our initial introduction to this equipment touts the immediate benefits of a safe, effective progression. So, we are training for life skills and recreational sports. Both require dynamic balance, corrective reflexes, and a reactive core.
Everyday sudden movements with resistance require a reactive core for powerful stabilization from your trunk musculature.
Fall prevention in daily tasks require reactive reflex and core resistance.
For example, take dog walking. In particular, a large adventurous dog will give a dynamic balance, reactive core workout to its handler at the other end of its leash. See more about dynamic balance training with reactive resistance in dog handling.
So, the topic of dog handling brings up another important reason for a fall prevention program. If you are a pet owner, you are living with a high risk tripping hazard. In fact, pet owners can suffer life challenging consequences if they sustain serious injury tripping over a pet. Without going into the importance of dog obedience training, let’s just prepare to react and not fall. Or be sure to maintain bone density with weight bearing resistance exercise throughout life. Read the study by a doctor on the topic of pet owners failing fall prevention in tripping over a pet. Hospitalization and irreversible damages to mobility are a high cost.
Can we have an overabundance of balance? Valid balance training or “circus acts?”
Since opening my live-in weight loss retreat residence, we have video proof of every demographic from student-athletes, and seniors to the morbidly obese up to 500 pounds. So, before you chalk it up to “circus acts,” ask yourself if you only believe in what you can readily do yourself. Let’s not be hasty to discredit these fitness drills. Weight loss retreat guests up to 500 pounds and 80 years old accomplish these drills with practice. If you can’t do them, do you accept the challenge?
Dynamic balance training challenge
Feel free to comment and let me know your answer. Every sport, every life task, requires dynamic balance. That is, the ability to maintain stability while moving. Better yet, unpredictable movement while reacting to unpredictable force. No, you can’t get that on a cardio machine by pressing buttons to control the intensity. That’s not how you respond to life or sports.
Step Aerobics is Fall Prevention Class
Examples of reactive reflexes in balance drills are step aerobics classes and trail running. Both give you unpredictable forces requiring quick reactions. Nothing is better to sharpen you for fall prevention. Life will not always be predictable so train for the unexpected. Learn to react, not fall.
