For Bicycle Instructors: This is a call to action. Experienced cyclists often underestimate the value of structured bicycle education. Many influencers “wing it” based on habits passed down from other riders, unknowingly spreading unsafe practices.
I was once the least likely person to become an LCI, working against the odds to gain this education. Yet I hosted Nevada’s first LCI Seminar in five years and contributed to national training efforts. If I can do it, others can too—if they care enough to make a difference.

Why Even Experienced Cyclists Need Smart Cycling
Many longtime riders assume they can bypass the Smart Cycling prerequisite because they “already know what they’re doing.” The truth is that most are simply copying habits from other cyclists rather than following tested best practices. A common example is reliance on a tiny helmet mirror to look behind without turning the head. This shortcut creates a major visibility problem. Unless a cyclist visibly scans with a head turn, other road users have no way of knowing whether they’ve been seen. Scanning is not just for the rider—it signals intention, which is essential for safety and predictability on the road.
Another reason seasoned cyclists need formal Smart Cycling instruction is the widespread misunderstanding of start–stop safety. In the United States, the slowest road users stay to the right, and statistically, most cyclist falls happen when mounting, stopping, or dismounting. Best practice is to step down with the right foot and lean the bike away from traffic so any loss of balance directs the fall safely toward the shoulder, not into a lane of moving vehicles.
Yet I once heard an experienced, self-taught group leader teach that riders should choose whichever side “felt natural.” His group later reported a domino-style crash when one cyclist dismounted to the left and fell into the riders beside him—directly toward traffic. This is exactly why influencers and long-time riders need Smart Cycling: personal habits are not the same as proven best practices, and incorrect guidance can put others in danger.
